For nearly 30 years, Sevenus Swimming has been firmly established in West London, with the Chiswick centre at its heart for almost two decades. Over the years, generations of the Sevenus family, and even some of the wider family in Sweden, have both worked in and learned to swim within the schools.
Today, the youngest of Laura’s children continues to play an active role in the business, working alongside their cousin and a hugely dedicated team who all share the same vision.
What began with one mother's passion and a back garden pool has become a family legacy that continues to flow across continents.
From a young age, Laura’s life was shaped by a deep family love of water. Growing up in Cape Town, she spent countless days swimming with friends and family, developing an early and natural connection with the ocean. Her parents nurtured this bond sparking a lifelong passion for swimming and the water’s healing energy.
A keen swimmer from childhood, she competed at both school and provincial level before being chosen in 1965 to join the renowned Water Follies and tour America as a synchronised swimmer. It was here that she discovered a new and inspiring side to the world of swimming, where lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences expanded her love of aquatics, setting her on lifelong path dedicated to sharing her passion with others.
During her children’s early years, she began developing what would become the Sevenus Swimming Method, a gentle, instinct-led approach that nurtures trust and natural ability in the water. Her own children were some of the first to benefit from this philosophy, effortlessly building confidence and skill through her intuitive way of teaching.
All three of Laura’s children naturally immersed themselves in the world of swimming, with her daughters working alongside her from an early age. After many successful years running the Camps Bay swim school in Cape Town, the Sevenus family expanded to the UK in 1997, later opening their flagship Chiswick centre in 2006.
In the early 2000’s, she developed the Baby Spa concept, inspired by her belief that the earlier children are introduced to water, the more natural their relationship with it becomes. She recognised that babies who experience water from the very beginning of life know nothing else, only a love of water. This led her to create a nurturing environment where even the youngest infants could benefit from water’s profound developmental and remedial qualities. Working closely with babies and parents, Laura continues to share her lifelong conviction that water heals, strengthens, and connects.
A proud mother of three and grandmother to seven healthy, energetic, and delightful grandchildren, she continues to share her wisdom, passion, and lifelong experience with new generations. She believes her purpose has been guided by a series of meaningful coincidences and synchronicities that have shaped her work and its global reach. Throughout this journey, Laura has had the immense support of her husband, Lars, whose encouragement and belief in her vision have been central to her success. Together, they built a life dedicated to helping others discover the transformative power of water.
Unquestionably, Laura has dedicated her life to facilitating swimming competency for people of all ages, transferring her deep love of water to everyone she teaches. To this day, she is never without her swimsuit in her bag, always ready to take a quick plunge whenever and wherever she can. Passionate, intuitive, and purpose-driven, Laura hopes to continue inspiring confidence and joy in the water for as long as she is able.
